ON THE PLEASURE OF NOT FITTING IN

Strange company.

A TABLE FOR THE UNUSUALGOOD CONVERSATION. QUESTIONABLE MANNERS.

FIG. 02 A place has been set. The guest list is wonderfully inconclusive.
A FEW THOUGHTS BEFORE DINNER

The best company
is a little unexpected.

Some bring a brilliant question. Some bring the thing that didn’t work. Some arrive with a very specific story about a very stubborn door. Pull up a chair. Every one of those is a perfectly good beginning.

Useful conversations rarely happen because everybody agrees. They happen when one person notices what another missed, when a first attempt meets a fresh pair of eyes, or when someone is generous enough to say, “Here’s where I got stuck.”

Keep your curiosity. Bring your own perspective. Give people credit for what they contribute, and leave a little room for the possibility that you might change your mind.

You don’t have to be extraordinary to belong here. You just have to arrive willing to make the next conversation a little more interesting than the last.

Dress code: entirely beside the point.
